TAP Introduces New Underground Duct System

Blue Duct (also known as AKDUCT) is an insulated underground duct system for both residential and commercial applications. Results in lab and field tests reinforced AKDUCT's equivalency to R-10. It is accomplished not only by being air tight but also by using thermal mass, a thermal property between the foamed HDPE (high density polyethylene) and the earth's constant temperature. It is also the result of AKDUCT capacity to store thermal energy for extended periods, that is, AKDUCT is effective in absorbing heating and cooling gains and releasing them during off cycle periods thus reducing the total load on the system.

The system is very easy to install. Compared to PVC coated galvanized duct or FRP ductwork, AKDUCT requires much less effort to assemble and install. The system is completely water tight so you never have to worry about water leaking into your duct. The typical system is made up of round ductwork but they also fabricate custom plenum boxes for floor grilles.

AKDUCT's embodied energy (highly desirable in LEED) methodology is to reduce the number of components that is in a typical construction formula used for underground air distribution systems. This includes R-10 wrapping, some types of polyvinyl chloride composite or reinforce fiber glass plastic or high gauged metal ducting, and cement trench structures with drain tile. None of these are used with AKDUCT systems, which has the least amount of interrelated economic activities resulting in a lower carbon footprint than our competitor's systems.
